Carolyn Maloney says COVID relief package should help debt-ridden places such as New York


Rep. Carolyn Maloney says the next COVID-19 relief package should be used in part to pay down New York’s local debts, appearing to confirm a frequent GOP criticism of the proposal.

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform chairwoman, who hails from New York, told MSNBC host Joshua Johnson that state and local relief would be a sticking point during an interview Sunday night.

“[The Republicans’ proposal] left out something very important to Democrats, and that’s aid to city and states,” she said. “In our package, we passed out of my committee $350 billion for cities and states like New York. … We are deeply in debt in both the city and the state, and this relief package will help the localities and the city-states and tribes and territories across our nation.”
