Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday that Canada will recognize a Palestinian state in September, following several other countries’ decisions to do so.
Canada joins France and the United Kingdom’s decisions to recognize Palestinian statehood now or in the near future.
“Canada intends to recognize the state of Palestine at the 80th General Assembly of the United Nations,” Carney said. “We intend to do so because the Palestinian Authority has committed to leading much-needed reform.”

Carney said he received assurances from the Palestinian Authority’s President Mahmoud Abbas that his administration will hold elections in 2026 and Hamas will “play no part.”
“(Abbas) has also committed to not militarizing the state of Palestine,” Carney added.
