The Capitol Police officer who died of suicide after responding to the riots that killed five people was a “dedicated public servant,” his family said Monday.
The lawyer for Officer Howard Liebengood’s family described his off-duty death in a statement as a “devastating loss,” BuzzFeed News reported.
“His death is a tragedy that has deprived all of us a dedicated public servant,” attorney Barry Pollack said in a statement. “His family has suffered a devastating loss and asks that they be given space to grieve in private.”
Pollack confirmed this death Saturday was a suicide but provided no further details.
The 51-year-old — who had been assigned to the Senate Division and joined the department in 2005 — is survived by his wife and siblings, the Washington Post reported.
His death came just three days after he responded to the mayhem at the Capitol building that left five dead, including another officer.
