An up-and-coming professional bull rider died from injuries during a “freak” accident at an event in California, officials said.
Amadeu Campos Silva, 22, died Sunday from injuries he sustained at the Velocity Tour event in Fresno, where he was involved in a “terrible wreck” shortly into his ride. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital, the Professional Bull Riders said.
The “rising star” from Brazil, who lived in Texas with his parents, was hurt roughly 5 seconds into his ride on a bull named “Classic Man,” suffering chest injuries, PBR spokesman Andrew Giangola told USA Today.
PBR’s livestock director, Cody Lambert, said he saw Silva being bucked off the bull.
“When he came off, his spur got tangled up and it turned him upside down right under the bull’s back leg,” Lambert told USA Today. “It’s just really a freak, tragic accident.”
