In a video posted to X on Monday, European Union Commission President Ursula von Der Leyen unambiguously stated that “Europe is ready to negotiate with the United States.”
Her post reflects what she said in her 22 second video clip:
“Europe is ready to negotiate with the US. We have offered zero-for-zero tariffs for industrials goods. Because we’re always ready for a good deal. But we’re also prepared to respond with countermeasures. And protect ourselves against indirect effects through trade diversion.”

NBC News reports that on Wednesday, Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs on the E.U. will take effect for most goods and “the bloc already faces 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum from the U.S.”
