President Joe Biden issued a muddled message on mask-wearing shortly after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised its recommendations, saying vaccinated people no longer need to don face coverings outside.
Biden walked up to a lectern set up on the White House’s North Lawn to provide an update on his administration’s response to the coronavirus pandemic wearing a mask and aviator sunglasses. An NBC News reporter asked the president why he had covered his face since he was vaccinated and outdoors.
“By watching me take it off and not putting it back on until I get back inside,” Biden told reporters Tuesday of his nonverbal message.
Once he took his mask off, Biden announced 215 million COVID-19 vaccine shots had been administered since his inauguration. More than two-thirds of the country’s seniors were fully inoculated against the virus, and 80% had received one
