Biden nominates Houston sheriff to lead ICE


President Joe Biden nominated a sheriff from Houston to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the White House announced Tuesday afternoon.

Biden selected Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez as director for ICE. Gonzalez will have to navigate a closely divided Senate to earn the job and at a time when liberal Democrats are determined to shutter the Department of Homeland Security agency rather than appoint a new leader.

Gonzalez is a lifelong resident of Houston and is in his second term as sheriff of the third-largest sheriff’s office in the country. He first joined the Houston Police Department and worked his way up from a civilian position to officer, then sergeant. He retired from the Police Department in 2009 and was elected to three terms on the Houston City Council before running for sheriff.
