The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched its first self-deportation initiative, named “Project Homecoming,” on Monday. It was the first of its kind; a charter flight that departed Texas, and included stops in Honduras and Colombia to transport 64 individuals who voluntarily chose to return to their countries of origin.
According to a post by DHS on X, all individuals who opted into the program received the same benefits offered through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Home App.
“They received travel assistance, a $1,000 stipend, and preserved the possibility they could one day return to the United States legally,” DHS stated.
