2 Alabama Schools Will Remove Confederate Namesakes

On November 10, 2022, the Montgomery County Board voted 5-2 to rename Robert E Lee High School and Jefferson Davis High School, per a WSFA report.

The former will soon be renamed to Dr. Percy Julian High School and the other will be renamed JAG High School, which is an acronym for civil rights leaders Judge Frank Johnson, the Reverend Ralph Abernathy and the Reverend Robert Graetz. According to an Axios report, this move came two years following the school board’s decision to remove the Confederate names.

Curiously, the schools have undergone significant demographics since the 1950s and 1960s. For example, in that period, those schools were predominantly white. Currently, 85% of students are black, according to an AP report.
